Brisbane Roar vs Central Coast Mariners at Moreton Daily Stadium
Result: Roar 0 - Mariners 2
Finals Appearance Confirmed for CCM
The Mariners confirmed their appearance in the Isuzu Men’s A-League for this season with a two nil victory over Brisbane in Redcliffe on Tuesday evening.
The home team have struggled this season as they languish at the lower end of the table. However, they came out with steely determination against the visiting Mariners. Raid after raid was repelled by the Mariner’s watertight defence. This was often aided by off-target shooting. When the defence was breached, there was Mark Birighitti playing the ideal goal-stopping role to perfection.
The game changed in the 40th minute as Cy Goddard, out wide on the left, took on and tricked his marker to put in a superb cross to the far post. This was met by a powerful Lewis Miller header to put the Mariners in the lead. This was Miller’s first A-League goal which came out of the blue.
The second half started like the first. Roar attacking en masse after making two key substitutions at half-time. Once more, the Roar were frustrated by the visitor’s outstanding defence with Birighitti called on to make some first class saves.
Astute substitutions by coach Nick Montogomery in the last quarter brought on Storm Roux and Garang Kuol. This pair combined magnificently in the 63rd minute with Kuol slipping the ball past the lone defender on the right of the penalty area for Roux who returned the favour to the 17 year old. This rising young star, showing great perception, slotted the ball neatly to the right of the Roar goalkeeper and into the net. This was Kuol’s fourth goal in only seven appearances.
The Mariners are on a roll at the right time of the season. This team can fear no other opponent. Anything can happen as they stride into the Finals for the second consecutive season.
