Fortunes Reversed against Sky Blues
After defeating the Phoenix by the same score line four days earlier, the Mariners succumbed to a dominant Sydney outfit losing five goals to nil.
Early in the game, the home side attacked with shots pouring in but none hit the back of the net. Against the run of play the visitors took the lead in the 27th minute as Le Fondre neatly slid the ball home.
After Sydney FC went ahead, Beni N’Kololo found space on the right and hit a powerful looping shot which hit the top of the far post and bounced away. Right on half time, Jason Cummings put in a strong header which went harmlessly over.
At half time the Mariners were one goal adrift but still competitive and threatening.
In a five-minute period from the 53rd, Sydney took the game by the scruff of the neck to put away three goals. Le Fondre completed his hattrick.
The Mariners defence was sliced open time and time again, leaving the young players frustrated and devastated. Joshua Nisbet continued to boss the midfield, his cross into the box was hit on target by Cummings which the goalie pushed over. That was as close as the Mariners came as Sydney completed the rout in the 3rd minute of time added on.
From a 5 – 0 win four days before to a 0 – 5 reversal was hard for the hone fans to take.
