Sydney FC vs Central Coast Mariners at Leichhardt Oval
Result: Sydney 3 - Mariners 2
Brave Mariners edged out by persistent Sydney
In a game that went end to end at Leichardt Oval, the Mariners faded which allowed the Sky Blues to power on to take the game. How much affect the recent COVID infections in the Mariners camp had on the energy levels displayed may have been the reason for the reversal.
The Mariners midfield lacked cohesion and penetration until the all-action Joshua Nisbet was introduced for the second stanza. It was soon after, in the space of five minutes that firstly skipper, Ollie Bozanic being fed the ball outside the penalty area by Miller, struck a precise and classy strike into the opposition net that hit underside of the crossbar before going in.
Not long after and on his debut, Scottish import Jason Cummings twisted and turned on the edge of the goal area before unleashing an unstoppable shot that hit both uprights before crossing the goal line. This gave the Yellow a 2-1 lead.
The hosts were not to be denied despite creating many chances which were either wasted or saved superbly by Birighitti. Sydney’s equaliser was claimed by Bobo but not without some fervent appeals for offside.
The clincher came from Caceres with minutes to go.
