Central Coast Mariners vs Melbourne City at Central Coast Stadium

Result: Mariners 1 - Wanderers 3

Mariners lose on return to Central Coast Stadium

Both teams took to the field depleted by the COVID pandemic. The Mariners midfield missed two vital players who have produced the magic moments which had enabled the boys in yellow to come out victorious in their previous two encounters.

To give credit to the visitors their defense stopped the Mariners attackers with great effect. It was a rare slip in that defence that enabled Marcos Urena to break free and fire home the equaliser late in the first half to go into half-time level at 1-all

In the 51st minute, Tom Glover in the City goal, was forced out to the edge of the penalty area as Urena powered through. The latter’s shot was palmed away much to the disappointment of the home supporters.

Despite using all the subs being used, the home side was unable to penetrate the City goal.

A lobbed cross from the left was neatly put away at the far post by Nabbout for City to give them the lead once more. As the Mariners players appeared to fade, last season’s champions tore into them.

There was to be a third goal which proved to be highly controversial. This time from a scramble in the goal area, newly arrived, Jenkinson punished the Mariners to make it 1 – 3.
